Why do I find the hashtag #ThawretWeladElKalb shameful?

In the past 3 days, a new Arab hashtag was trending in the Arab world under the title #ThawretWeladElKalb meaning “the revolution of sons of bitches” in reference to the recent protests in Israel. From the way it has been spelled, I assume it was an Egyptian who made it up, but I have no evidence for it. I described this hashtag today, on my twitter account, as “discriminatory and racist” and I thought it is shameful to witness such an act practiced by the so called “Arab revolutionaries”. Many have reacted by calling me a Zionist or a self-hating Arab. Others started preaching me about the crimes done by the state of Israel as if I were Anwar Al-Sadaat!

I do not hate Israelis (although the Arab educational system raises you up to hate Jews automatically, and to feel superior towards others in general) but I definitely oppose and hate the crimes done by the state of Israel, just the way I do with our Arab dictatorships (keeping in my mind that Israel has been acting way more merciful with its own citizens, unlike our almighty police-state regimes). On the other hand, I also have the same feelings towards Arab suicide bombers who kill people in a night club or a school bus. I believe killing a human cannot be justified what so ever, regardless of the ideology, identity, or religion of the victim and the victimizer.

Arabs lately have been bragging about their “peaceful struggle” for democracy (although using the word democracy is very problematic) and the world has very much appreciated how the Arab Spring shows the other side of Arab nations unlike the deformed image that extremists have established for us over the years. And starting from this exact point, Arabs cannot give up the peaceful path they chose, just when the subject comes to their “classical enemy” Israel. Arab revolutionaries should act more responsible not to contradict themselves and clearly understand what Gandhi once said “an eye for an eye makes the world blind”. They should give up their long heritage that is filled with epics about revenge represented within heroic frames.

Arabs should also understand that their revolutions will only stand up truly when they strongly believe that the revolutions are not only against figures of their regimes but also revolutions to reconstruct their cultures and root out all forms of discrimination because simply discrimination can never be justified and verbal abuse only makes you look worse. Arabs cannot label every Israeli as a criminal, and ironically enough, they do not know that people who protested recently in Israel come from different backgrounds including anti-occupation activists and Arab-Israelis. What most of Arabs know about Israel is just what they know about Chinese linguists!

I am not a Zionist, and the Palestinian-Israeli question is not something we can easily answer. I am a strong believer in the one state solution because it is the only solution that chooses the human being over the imaginary frames created by frozen thoughts. However, it does not matter whether you are with the one state solution or with “getting the whole land back”, because at the end you should know that discriminating against Israelis will not make you look good, it will deepen the gap between you and others, and it will make you practice the sin that you wouldn’t want anyone to practice against you.

All sorts of human struggle should be hailed, respected, and appreciated. We need to act as humans above all because only this way we can win. We need to admit that discrimination is a norm in Arab countries and that revolutions should fight it in all its forms.

Thank you Mona. The truth is that the surest way to tear down and replace the Israeli state is to prove it to be UNNECESSARY. The racism showing up in this hashtag is doing precisely the opposite: it is reinforcing to the Israelis the attitude that they should stick together and fight like a cornered animal.

Wonderful post, and the previous comment is very much to the point. The #j14 tag has become an unusable/unreadable cesspool overnight. As someone who's been trying to follow the various "hashtag revolts" from abroad, I find it maddening. But an Israeli who follows that tag is now reading a stream of racist abuse and calls for Jews to be expelled "back" to Germany or Russia. #Fail doesn't suffice. Kudos to Arab tweeters/bloggers who have spoken up against this idiocy, as I'm sure they're paying the usual price of moral consistency.

Israel should never exist, they stole the land.
And when did the israelis act as humans and cared about the other?!!!
This hashtag is not racist nor discriminatory. Its just regular Egyptian mocking and sarcasm. with a stance of hate for the israelis for what they do not for what they are. They are not hating israelis for being Jews or Jews in general for being Jews. They are mocking the israelis for stealing the land, their non-ending crimes against those people, their racism and their crimes against Egypt and Egyptians. So again its not about what you are. Its about what you do.
You can write your fancy words for the Americans brainwashed by media moved by zionism. They will like those fancy words.
Sorry, I cant sympathize with the thief and the criminal. I would save that for the victim.

I can say now that I have found the perfect poster child for Culturally defeated individual , what you say here may get the ADL prize , or 10 minutes with Anderson Cooper , but at the end this all BS , to say there is a peace loving population in Israel is just plain stupid , and falling for the good cop bad cop game they suck us into ....Just keep it real , and F*** Israel

Do you know how ridiculous that sounds to hear when Syria is hard at work making Israelis look like angels?

While you're at it, keep talking about "stolen land" when there are houses in Cairo and Alexandria where the doors are still marked with boltholes from the Jewish amulets their owners took when they fled. You think those homes weren't stolen?

This racism, this hatred, this hypocrisy, and this lack of self-consciousness, this is the crap that proves to Israelis that they need their state.

Those protests have been started by anti Zionist radical left wing anarchists.
It's so ironical that the Arab savages calling "sons of the dogs" to those people. It just showing that the Arabs are stupid and full of hate to those who much high level than them. I have already sent all those "son of dogs" links to some of our "smolanim" (Leftis) to show them that the sea is the same sea and the arabs are the same arabs, as said our former PM Itzhak Shamir.

Thank you very much for the lovely post. Most of the Arabs simply don't understand that threatening Israel will only deepen the conflict and mutual hate. If they are looking to destroy Israel and preach to its non-existence, they shouldn't be surprised by the fact that Israelis will only feel more encouraged to fight back and more harshly. On the day that the Arabs put down their weapons, this region would thrive and prosper. I hope this day arrives.

The problem, wa7edmenmasr, is that people like you on both sides think they hold the truth in the palm of their hands.
Without giving up on these nonsensical ideas of "justice" and "righteousness" there will be no peace. Only pragmatism can prevail in this conflict.

Oh, yeah right. You think anyone is dumb enough to buy that? Even this dumb American knows what "Falastin biladna wa al yahud kilabna" means. WHen you use "weladalkalb", you know damn well what you're referring to. You're mocking these people for standing up for their dignity because to you they are dogs and don't have any.

Thank you for this post. There is a need to have different views shared and for strong discussion to take place so that the Arab intellectual stagnation of the past few decades can begin to subside.

Though I understand where you're coming from. I think there are a few truths that need to be acknowledge before we proceed with any argument.

The most important truth of course is that Israel is a colonial power. They came in during the early 20th century and through massacres, terrorism and oppression they drove out 800 000 Palestinians and took their houses. Since that time they've carried on with a continuous campaign of humiliation, isolation and dehumanization of Palestinians and Arabs, until today.

This can not be forgotten.

It also can not be forgotten that Israel's existence in the middle of the Arab work has strong correlation with the dictatorships that have beaten the masses into submission.

Within that cultural political historical context a hashtag such as #ThawretWeladElKalb may be insulting and I guess it can be seen as uncivilized, but there is grounds for it, is there not ?

Thank you again, Ramadan kareem

Nice Post Mona =)
But looks like all of you guys really don't understand the Egyptian spirit of sarcasm.
and yes we all do have different cultures so It's normal for you to think that this hash tag is racist =) cause you took the exact meaning of the words =) although It should be taken as an expression =P

so can anyone of you just tell me when did Israel use the terms "justice" and "righteousness" !!!!!!!
they even disrespect united nations orders =)
so you really believe that if you respected them they would respect you back !!!
believe me we have tried that lots =)
read your history
they never respected their word =)
beside all their crimes.
and I really find it silly that anyone could believe that this protests in Israel could end occupation =)

1- I believe this topic is over-hyped! Yes, there was a hashtag, however, translating it, & turning it into an overall Arab sentiment, or a sentiment of Egyptian revolutionaries is an exaggeration. Anyone who knows the Egyptian dialect, knows you can’t simply turn it into “sons of bitches”. I believe the vast majority of Arabs are really indifferent and don’t care much about these protests.

2- Yes, there’s always been hate towards Israelis in the Arab World. Yes, there’s a lot of ignorance & bigotry (even towards other Arabs) in the Arab world thanks to these regimes who love this lack of critical thinking & inherent hate which they can play on. However, many people have woken up in the past years and learned that stereotyping & generalizations are exclusively wrong.Of course, we need more improvement. What's ironic is that Arabs used to be way more tolerant 100 or 200 years ago.

3- It’s really ironic to see some Israelis take the moral high while their state was based on superiority of a supposed race and 70 years of active ethnic cleansing of another, and while their politicians resemble Nazis the most.

4- It’s important to note that a growing number of Israelis in different peace movements (some are even descendents of known hardliners) are actively working for peace and are helping the Palestinians on the ground more than most Arabs are. I salute them, and think they're of the finest moral fabric in this world.

5- I also believe the Israeli protests are over-hyped; they're mainly out for economic reasons. I seriously doubt that this will benefit the Palestinians in any way. Who knows, maybe the answer to some of those complaints might be a brilliant right-wing remedy of colonizing more land & offering cheap housing.

6- Many Israeli leftists, even those friendly to Arabs, are totally oblivious or in-denial when it comes to how their country was found on ethnic-cleansing and find it weird/anti-semetic/genocidal when an angry Arab says he wants all 5 million Palestinian refugees to return, and those who occupied their houses to go back to where they came from. Although international law support the return of refugees, that’s another matter. Ideally, I’m with a one-state solution; but realistically, that won’t happen, as long as the Zionist ideology is still in control.

In this world few of us choose their religion, most of us follow our parents religion upon birth. There is nothing wrong to be a jew, christian, muslem, ... but to be an israeli that means that you accept to kill a palestinian, expell him from his homeland or at least to oppress him.

Very nice article. I agree with (almost) every word.
Don't let the racists bring you down. Like u said, it's not their fault. Their upbringing has taught them nothing but hate towards Israel and the Jews.
The "Social Revolution" in Israel is mainly about the cost of living, but it is also about social standing in general in Israel, and this includes the Arab Israelis and, of-course, the Palestinians.

God willing, one day the Arab world will abandon its hate and learn to accept his neighbor - flawed as he may be.

True prosperity can only be achieved by co-existence and mutual respect - not by racism, terror & war.

The words delusional and misguided pale in comparison to whatever adjective describes the mentality of the writer...discrimination and racism...since when did hating murderers and genocidal maniacs became racist...but wait they are not all killers...they just stand by watching and don't refuse that (save for a minority that haven't lost their humanity)...so basically if i don't shoot you dead myself but stand-by watching as my army kills you to get more land and build more settlements I am no murderer!!!! SOME LOGIC YOU HAVE THERE!!!

Now that is classic...I hope u've noticed that to make urseves look good u just compared urself to a mass murderer...what does that say about u??? oh and by the way if u think bashar is worse just google images for dead palestinian children killed by idf and u'll realize he still has a long way to go to become like idf despite everything he has done...and about the houses, they fled these houses when irguns and similar terrorists started the genocide against Palestinians cause after these crimes they were no longer accepted.

"All sorts of human struggle should be hailed, respected, and appreciated." And the cause of the struggle is irrelevant??? http://www.gilad.co.uk/writings/gilad-atzmon-the-landlord-wannabe-protest.html We should support them for this, knowing that additional lands will be ripped from cold dead Palestinian hands!!! What kind of logic is that???

Marina S said...

Thank you for a wonderful post. Change a few terms here and there, and the same message could be relevant for the Israeli right wing idiots trying to shame and discourage the #J14 activists - because they also realise that social justice in the Middle East spells and end to the conflict and a dignified life for all.

"And when did the israelis act as humans and cared about the other?!!!"

I'm Israeli. To you, I am nothing but a dog - not human, never could have acted as human. I was born in the USSR and my grandparents are Holocaust survivors; they escaped from people who also thought they were not human. I don't know what proof I can give you over the internet that I do care about others - you will probably just call me more names and accuse me of being Hasbara or something. But I do care, and no amount of hatred from you will change that. That is all.

Maysa said...

BTW, #ThawretWeladElKalb translates into the revolution of the dogs, not the revolution of the sons of bitches as you claim. Sensationalism goes contrary to accuracy.

You should not hate Israelis, but you should hate injustice they commoit. You should hate the occupation, which they have prolonged via their democratic system, both as Labor and Likud and Kadima. You should hate the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians simply because they are not jewish. You should hate home demolition of non-Jewish homes. You should hate the discrimination non-Jews ares subjected to by Jewish Israelis. You should hate Israeli wars that kill women and children in Lebanon and Gaza. You should hate Israel's nuclear arsenal. You should hate many things about Israelis, if you consider yourself a just and humane person who opposes injustice. And you might as well not hate slavers too, but hate slavery. You might as well not hate Nazis but hate what they do. We don't disagree on semantics so long as we agree that there are sordid things that people do to others that we must hate.

"6- Many Israeli leftists, even those friendly to Arabs, are totally oblivious or in-denial when it comes to how their country was found on ethnic-cleansing "

It seems most Arabs (not all, but most) are completely oblivious as to how ridiculous they sound when they talk like that.

Do you think your own countries are pure as the driven snow? You treated your Jewish minority like, dare I say it? DOGS. So they left to this little enclave where they can live like human beings.

In America, a "son of a bitch" is someone who is willing to do wicked things. In the Arab world, a "son of a dog" is someone who does not deserve dignity, because he is Jewish, or Christian, or the wrong kind of Muslim, or a little too dark, or because his family has no wasta and no money.

You can claim that it's Egyptian sarcasm to use this phrase, but you know full well what this is about. That combination of self-righteousness and plain old racism.

Mona, Sachtein. A brave and important voice! it is not at all easy to fight fear and prejudice on both sides. I am Jewish, Israel, a 1 stater. Believing in sharing the space between the sea and the river for all people. With freedom of movement, arranging in communities, right of return and remaining settlement. For this to succeed, a true social justice, Adalla Ijtimaiya is required. This process going on in Israel should be pointed in that direction and assisted in the process.

Anonymous said...

Perfect analysis, Mona!
There is prejudice on both sides and there are strong voices against racism and abuse on both sides. Your voice is precious to all of us.
- Ha! I live in France and the government is unable here to find a solution to the problem raised by a few thousands gypsies from Romania and Bulgaria... I wish people would make the comparison to what happens in the Near East, I wish people could see racism in a wider perspective. -

Wow. You just gave anti-Muslims bigots perfect justification for attacking Muslim Americans in response to 9/11.

And to boot, you're wrong. Here's Egypt in 1840:

"Hated and contemned by the Moslems, they are compelled to pay tribute to the Turks; and they tamely submit to insult and indignity from the meanest Arabs. The animosity of the Moslems toward the Jews is no less proverbial than that of the Jews toward the Moslems. So abominable are the Jews in the eyes of the Turks, that when any of them are condemned to suffer death, they are invariably hanged — lest, should they be beheaded, according to the usual mode of executing criminals in the East, the sword should be defiled by the blood of a Jew! The name of Jew, among the Egyptians, is synonymous with the most opprobrious epithets. The muledrivers, when nettled by the obstinacy of their headstrong animals, after exhausting their strength in whipping them, and their imaginations in endeavouring to find words for an adequate expression of their displeasure, find a consoling revenge by applying to their mules and jackasses the hateful name of Jew!"

Are you surprised that Jews left as soon as a better alternative came along?
